The short version
What does Hale & Hearty do?
Hale & Hearty is a food diary for iPhone and Apple Watch. You log meals, water, supplements and how you feel — by describing them, photographing them, or scanning a barcode. If you allow Apple Health, sleep, movement and your cycle sit beside what you ate. Insights are written from your own logs, not from generic advice.
What does it deliberately not do?
It is not a medical device, and it does not diagnose, treat or tell you a food is bad. There is no Hale & Hearty account. We don't run analytics or ads. The Nutrition Support Index only ever builds as you nourish yourself — it never drops because you ate something indulgent. Calories are not the point of the product.
How do I clear my data?
In the app, go to Profile, scroll to the bottom, and tap Delete All Data. That permanently erases logs, goals and settings on this device, clears synced caches, and asks a paired Apple Watch to drop the recent window. Deleting the app alone only removes data from that device; use Delete All Data if you want the iCloud copy gone too.
How do I get a refund?
Purchases and refunds are handled by Apple, not by us. We cannot process a refund. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com, signed in with the Apple Account you used to buy. Apple decides refunds under its own policies. Cancelling a subscription in Settings stops the next renewal; it does not refund the period you're in.
Getting started
How do I set up my profile?
Tap the profile icon in the top right of the Home screen. From there you can set your name, body stats, nutrition goals, and food preferences. The more detail you add, the more personalised your recommendations will be.
How do I connect Apple Health?
The app will request access to Apple Health when you first open it. You can manage permissions at any time by going to iPhone Settings → Privacy & Security → Health → Hale & Hearty and toggling the data types you want to share.
What does the Nutrition Support Index (NSI) mean?
The NSI is a gentle quality indicator for your day's nutrition, not a score. It moves through four tiers: Low → Building → Supported → Highly Supported. It's driven by protein, fibre, water, and nourishment boosters. It never decreases when you log food, so there's no penalty for eating something indulgent.
Can I use the app without Apple Watch?
Yes. Sleep, movement, and cycle data are enhanced by Apple Watch, but all nutrition logging and insights work without it. Cards that rely on Health data will show a 'Connect Health' state if access isn't granted.
Logging entries
How do I log a meal?
Tap the + button in the centre of the tab bar. You can describe your meal in text, take a photo, pick from your gallery, or scan a barcode. The AI will identify ingredients and nutrients automatically. You can review and adjust before saving.
Can I log the same meal again quickly?
Yes. The My Foods tab keeps your library. Favourites are meals you've starred, Recipes are ones you've built. Tap either to see the meal, then Log. Saved meals and recent entries also appear in the Log Food flow for quick re-entry.
How accurate is the AI food recognition?
AI identification is a best-effort estimate based on visual appearance and your description. It works best with common dishes. For packaged foods, barcode scanning gives the most accurate nutritional data. Always review the suggested nutrients before confirming a log.
How do I log water?
Tap the + button on the Water card on the Home screen, or tap the Water card itself to open the full Water view and log from there.
How do I log a supplement?
Tap the + button in the tab bar and select 'Log supplements'. You can search from a list of common supplements, set your dose, and mark it as taken.
How do I log a symptom?
Tap the + button in the tab bar and select 'Log symptom'. Choose from categories like digestion, energy, mood, and more. Symptoms are plotted on the Home timeline alongside meals and workouts.
How do I delete a logged entry?
Swipe left on any meal, supplement, symptom, or water entry in Logs, or on a meal card anywhere it appears, and tap Delete. Saved recipes and favourites work differently: open one from My Foods, tap 'Edit recipe' or 'Edit meal', and use the ⋯ menu in that screen's header.
Apple Watch & Health data
Why isn't my sleep showing up?
Make sure Sleep Focus was turned on before you went to bed, and that your Apple Watch was worn and charged. After waking, keep your Watch near your iPhone for a few minutes to allow data to sync to the Health app. It can take up to 10 minutes to appear.
Why is my movement data not showing?
Movement data comes from the Health app. Make sure you've granted this app access to Steps and Active Energy in iPhone Settings → Privacy & Security → Health. Your Move goal is set in the Fitness app. Tap your Activity rings to change it.
Why is my cycle data not showing?
Cycle data is read from HealthKit menstrual flow records, which can be logged via the Apple Health app or Apple Watch. Make sure you've granted access to Menstrual Cycle Data in iPhone Settings → Privacy & Security → Health.
Can I manually override Health data?
Sleep, steps, workouts, exercise minutes, heart rate variability, your Move goal and cycle data are read from Health. To change any of those, edit them in the Apple Health or Fitness app and they'll reflect here. Three things travel the other way: water you log here is written as dietary water, menstrual flow you log here is written as a menstrual flow sample, and the nutrition from each meal you log is written as dietary samples. Deleting a meal removes the samples this app wrote for it.
Goals & progress
How do I change my nutrition goals?
Go to Profile → My Goals → Daily Targets for protein, carbohydrates, fat and fibre. Water is on the Water Intake card next to it, and on the Water screen under the pyramid it fills.
Why does the NSI not go down when I eat something 'unhealthy'?
By design. The NSI only ever increases as you add nutrition to your day. No food is 'bad'. The goal is to support your body, not penalise choices. Eating a burger doesn't take away the spinach you had earlier.
How are food recommendations generated?
Recommendations are driven by what your body might need based on your logged data: open micronutrient goals, protein and fibre shortfalls, your sleep quality, heart rate variability, activity level, cycle phase, and what you ate yesterday. They update as you log more during the day.
What are Nourishment Boosters?
Nourishment Boosters track four food groups with broad health benefits: Vegetables, Omega-3 sources, Nuts & Legumes, and Whole Grains. They're a simple way to see whether you're eating a variety of whole foods, beyond just hitting macro numbers.
Family Sharing
What can I share with family?
Two things: recipes and your allergies. Share a recipe from the recipe editor's ⋯ menu, and your allergy list from Preferences → Allergens & Triggers. Both go out as a link through the normal iOS share sheet.
Is anything ever shared automatically?
No. Every share is something you explicitly send through the share sheet. There are no standing feeds, no automatic alerts, and no way for anyone to see your logs, macros, or insights. The shared data travels inside the link itself and is never stored on a server.
What happens when I accept a share?
You'll see a preview before anything is added. Accepting a recipe saves your own copy under My Foods → Recipes. Accepting an allergy list adds that person to Profile → Family.
Privacy & data
Where is my data stored?
Your logs and photos live in the app's private storage on your device. When you're signed into iCloud, they also sync across your devices via Apple's private CloudKit. There is no separate Hale & Hearty account. Your data lives in your Apple Account, not ours. See the Privacy Policy for the full picture.
Is my food photo sent anywhere?
A photo you use for AI food logging is sent to the AI service for recognition, through a relay we run that passes the request on without storing it. The providers we use don't keep requests or train models on them; the Privacy Policy names them and lists exactly what is sent. A photo you attach to a meal is also kept with that meal, on your device and in your private iCloud, and is deleted when you delete the meal. Text descriptions are sent the same way.
